Winter 2010 Conditioning

Winter conditioning will start on Tuesday, December 7 and take place through the end of February 2011 (excluding 12/23-12/31). Sessions will be held from 3 to 5 PM every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on the corner of Montrose Road and East Jefferson Street in Rockville. Please see the specifics in the draft conditioning plan on the “Training” link on the navigation bar (with the drop-down menu for winter training).

The winter conditioning program is mandatory for continuing rowers. The only exception we can make is for students who participate in a winter sport that would make it impossible to attend all Crew practices. If your student is on a winter team, please let us know. We may grant you an exemption, though your student will still need to attend at least one practice per week for erg training. This is important, since erging will help develop rowing muscles and minimize injury in spring.

Winter Conditioning Dates:

DEC 2010: 12/7, 9, 10, 14, 16, 17, 21
JAN 2011: 1/4, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 25, 27, 28
FEB 2011: 2/1, 3, 4, 8, 10, 11, 15, 17, 18, 22, 24, 25

NOTE: There is a Ride-On bus that can transport our students from Churchill to the JCC. The Number 38 route stops at Gainsborough/Tuckerman at 2:20 and at 2:50. It takes 10 minutes to get to JCC (the stop is in front of JCC).

Registration forms and check are due by November 30th, 2010 to Sharon Ong’s home.

Winter Conditioning Update

Good news! After searching for more than two months, we have finally found a venue for our winter conditioning program.   We will be holding our winter conditioning at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on the corner of Montrose Road and East Jefferson Street in Rockville.

The JCC welcomes guests and members of all races and religions and has been especially accommodating to Churchill Crew. They are willing to store our ergs for us at no extra charge and will allow us to use a well-equipped yoga room for our practice sessions, as well as their basketball court/gym when it is available.

We looked into eight facilities before we settled on the JCC.  Many parents, including Sherry Guber, Grace Shen, Karl Means, and Sue Spies, have investigated other facilities for Churchill Crew.  We thank all the parents for their help and support.  Special kudos go to Brian and Carol Sosner, who broached the deal with the JCC for us. We are confident that you will like the place too.

Tonight we will send out the letter with more details on registration for winter conditioning. We are looking forward to winter conditioning and to helping the kids continue to develop their fitness levels and rowing techniques.

Thank you for your continued support.

Ann and Sharon

FINALChurchill_Crew Safety_Plan2.10-29-10.Final

Click the link above to download the 12 page file of the safety plan.     This plan was created by Churchill Crew Parents, Jill Mizrachy and Wayne Cohen. Thanks to them for their efforts. As you can see, it is a lovely and excellent document. It really sets a high bar for what we do at Churchill Crew.  Thanks, Jill and Wayne.

This document has 12 pages. It will be a good idea (good idea really means mandatory!) for parents and rowers to read all 12 pages. At the very minimum, rowers need to review pages 11 and 12 (Rules and Expectations) and sign on page 12. Parents need to read all 12 pages and sign on page 10.Please print pages 10,11 sign and bring the signed copy to the boat house tomorrow or Sunday.  We also asked our student coordinator, Jackie Yang, to email pages 11 and 12 to the rowers, so they can be alerted too.
